Using eBay Auctions for Cause Fundraising

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Everyone is getting on the bandwagon. Large corporations successfully use eBay auctions to offload excess stock, the Postal Service rids itself of unclaimed merchandise, police departments sell confiscated goods. Thousands of nonprofits are doing business with eBay.

Are eBay auctions the fundraiser’s cash machine or are the dangling cash-carrots never quite reachable?

There you have both ends of the online auction spectrum. Likely, your organisation’s ability to generate donations in this fashion lies somewhere in between, hopefully toward the high end. Merely registering an account with eBay doesn’t guarantee that sellers will be prompted to donate part of an item’s selling price to your group. Or that buyers will gobble up your items. Philanthropically minded people are only beginning to see online auctions as a serious avenue of charitable giving.

Successfully trading on eBay is far more than a mechanical process. You’ll need staff and/or volunteer commitment, and sales and marketing know-how. It takes little skill to get on the bandwagon; it takes a lot not to fall off.

There are several main reasons to use eBay as part of your overall fundraising plan. Not because its the cool thing to do. Not because it takes the place of person-to-person campaigning.

But because:
* EBay enables your group to reach a huge, new market of non-constituents, uncultivated strangers who will immediately participate in funding your projects by buying your items.

*You can fit a few hundred people in an in-house auction room, but you can reach millions online.
*You’ll capture new prospects. A percentage of buyers will turn out to be donors to future campaigns if your follow-through is sound. Otherwise, why not simply run an online membership auction from your organisation’s web site?
* It’s cost effective. No space to rent, tickets to sell, caterers to hire, and so on.
* Its novelty will captivate volunteers who are used to performing the same campaign tasks year after year.

How you can capture a profitable share of this new market depends on the sales direction you take, the items you offer, how they’re presented, and your game plan.

Direct and Community Selling
You’ll obviously receive the most income and acquire the most new prospects if your group uses donated items to auction. For nonprofits, eBay terms this “Direct Selling.” It’s the same technique used by organisations that produce in-house, live auctions by soliciting in-kind gifts.

“Community Selling” is a term eBay uses to describe the process whereby sellers designate all or part of the selling price to an organisation. This offers your present donors new opportunities to support your drive.

For example, the Smith’s annual gift is $125. Your latest newsletter describes and promotes the benefits to the campaign from members selling unwanted items on eBay. The Browns’ decide that two 17″ hand painted platters are items they haven’t used for years. They list them on eBay at $19.95 each and designate your group to receive 80% of the selling price.

The remaining 20%, they figure, will take care of shipping. The platters each sell for $25. You have an additional donation from the Browns of $40. If 99 other present donors did the same you’d have an additional $4,000 on top of their cash gifts. And what about the members who couldn’t afford to give you cash donations? Surely, many of them would find an item or two to sell on eBay on your behalf. So, you see, the potential for raising funds through eBay is real, but eBay is only the vehicle, not the driving force. Selling the concept is the organisation’s job.

What Items to Offer?
While it’s been shown that many non-constituent eBay buyers react favorably to knowing that proceeds of a sale are helping fund a nonprofit organisation, their interest is driven by an item’s appeal, not necessarily an organisation’s mission.

People will buy anything, especially when they think they’re getting a deal. Last time I looked, a set of 10 real shark teeth was about to be auctioned for $7.99. But since you’re in the serious business of raising money, not running online garage sales, offering genuine collectable teeth will do little to help fund your annual budget. Stay away from trinkets when soliciting direct selling items if possible. However, memorabilia is a natural for online auctions.

The more your items play to a universal audience the more they’ll be seen, and the higher the selling price. For example, a vintage Cowboy type belt buckle from a city in Arizona could sell to a local organisation member or be even more valuable to an Australian outback buyer.

Most everything sells on eBay, but collectibles have always been big sellers, also electronics in all categories, music, books and games. Everyone has a few old books and CDs lying around that you can convert to cash by selling them on ebay. And certainly one-time, high profile items with special appeal, like seats in a corporate box at a big game. Or a trip to the Barrier Reef.

Why Employee Satisfaction and Exit questionnaires Make Good Sense

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

In a competitive world with the need for businesses to be more productive and streamlined an organization can often find itself with a workforce working under pressure suffering from low moral and experiencing a high staff turnover. Organizations that have a highly motivated workforce can benefit enormously and having a workforce that is both productive and motivated should not be regarded as being mutually exclusive to one another.

Left unattended employers run the risk of alienating their employees, events can cause employee frustrations to boil over resulting in employers finding themselves on the back foot, faced with a problem that cannot be ignored.

Ideally employers would take time to understand the needs of their employees and learn from their experiences of working on the front line, but employers are often themselves tied up day to day fighting their own fires.

Online surveys can automate the intelligence gathering process allowing the collated data to be instantly analysed thereby providing the management with a low cost and effective method to help towards achieving a pleasant working environment with the aim of promoting employee satisfaction while still ensuring that productivity is high.

Unproductive & dissatisfied

There are many reasons why employees may be dissatisfied with their job and more often than not staff frustration is channelled into a demand for higher salaries and less hours. Employers who tackle problems thinking it is all about salary and hours, will often find later that they have been dealing with the symptoms and not the root cause.

Not just about the money

The following is a list of common barriers that will prevent an organization from achieving an increase in productivity, none of which are likely to be resolved by increasing salaries or reducing hours:-

  • Insufficient training
  • Out of touch management
  • Dated working methods
  • Lack of proper tools and equipment

There have been many studies that have consistently revealed that financial reward is not the most important motivator for employees, providing an employee is being paid the market rate the employer would be wrong to think that the solution to all employee problems is through paying higher salaries.

Take the case of a single mother who is juggling a full time job with the need to look after three children. Out of frustration she may demand more money so that she feels that she is able to cope where a better solution, for both her and the business, may be more flexible working hours.

It is all about communication

It is in any organization’s interest to encourage communication. A company where the management does not communicate well with their employees, or will wait for any problems to be raised, can often be deceived into thinking that they have a content workforce when they don’t. It can take only one aggrieved employee with one small problem for an entire workforce to develop a destructive ‘them and us’ attitude.

Improving communication

Ideally employer and employee would meet one on one but in practice this would seem practical only for very small organizations.

Regular meetings between management and worker representatives are good in theory but they often become talking shops and can begin to lose their edge as the participants become familiar with one another and the forum runs the risk of being hijacked by the more extrovert personalities.

Suggestion boxes can be useful but can be viewed as token efforts by management as they wait for personnel to highlight a problem.

Newsletters can be useful, but their main purpose is generally to inform and not discuss issues.

Keeping the initiative

Conducting employee satisfaction surveys on a regular basis you are able to ask each employee specific questions and present a pro-active management initiative where the whole workforce can be canvassed on various issues. Surveys are able to provide a level playing field between the quieter and more vocal employees.

Being prepared to consulate with employees should not be seen as a sign of weakness, a confident manager will take counsel from all quarters before making a decision. By issuing a survey the employer is able to keep the initiative and tackle problems from a position of strength as opposed to waiting for problems to manifest and then possibly develop out of proportion.

Leave lots of minor problems unresolved and a further small problem might just break the camel’s back and in a blink of an eye change the mood of the workforce from positive to negative.

It is easy and quick

For most organizations online surveys represent a proactive and low cost solution. They can be created very quickly and for the majority of organizations, where most of the personnel have desktop computers, they are also quick to deploy direct to the individual.

In situations where not all of the personal have access to a computer there are options available to implement the online survey solution such as providing a shared computer, have an operator input their responses or as a last resort, a hardcopy survey.

Job satisfaction

There are elements that together will help towards providing an employee with job satisfaction, including company ethics, working environment, methodology and ethos to having effective and decisive management. Job satisfaction brings benefits through improved motivation and productivity from a workforce that feels that they are treated as individuals and not a commodity item.

Educate and inform

An online survey can also be used to educate and pass on to the workforce important information, the ‘message’ is consistently delivered and does not suffer from the Chinese whisper phenomenon where a message can be distorted as it is handed down.

An online survey can explain a difficult situation to the employees and get valuable feedback as to the best solution. It is rare in this situation that the workforce would appear negative; it is more likely they will feel informed and empowered and that might be enough to turn a negative problem into a positive challenge that unites the workforce.

Exit surveys

Exit surveys are a good way for management to ensure that when people leave the organisation they are leaving for the right reasons and not due to reasons that if appreciated earlier could have been addressed and resolved. If a problem has been identified it may be too late to prevent an individual from leaving but if addressed it could prevent other key personnel leaving for the same reasons.

Improve Your Game With Golf Swing Tips

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Are you trying to improve your golf swing? If so, you need to think of the basics of a good golf swing everytime you’re on the course. One of the biggest problems that golfers tend to do is that they don’t think about the process, but just swing at the ball. Hitting the ball isn’t the hard part; it’s getting the ball to the area that is desirable for the game.

You need to understand the mechanics of good golf swing and what you have to do to be consistent every time. You should go through all the steps so that you can improve your game and become more accurate.

There are only three parts of the club that you need to get familiar with. First, you need to know about the clubface. The clubface is what controls your golf ball. You also need to know the club head is what controls the dimension of your golf stokes. The shaft is what will control the plane of your golf swing. As for the golf stroke, there are hinge action, centrifugal force, and inclined plane. They all have to do with the parts of your club and they will affect your golf stroke positively or negatively.

You should know that for a good golf stroke you need to have balance, steady head movements, and some rhythm. Basically you don’t want to move your head like you’re bobbing for apples; you need to look down and up once to get your body lined up. The key is to know when to shift your weight and this is where your balance comes into play. As for your rhythm the club shaft should move at the same time and speed as your left arm.

For a good stroke, you might never bend your left arm (if you are right handed). You also will need to take your back swing, hit the ball, and continue with the follow through. If you don’t follow through the ball will not be hit as good as you would have liked. You will also want to look at your stance before you do anything.

You will need to comfortably separate your legs, but you don’t have to feel like you are stretching. A comfortable stance is what will make your shot go far and it will help you focus on other things like your swing.

Your golf swing won’t improve over night (don’t I wish). You will want to practice daily. You can go to a golf range and practice or you can practice at your home – but don’t hit the ball. If you have an open field, you can proceed to hit the ball, but if you just practice and think about your stance and your swing, you will notice that your game will increase.

Birding in Prosperous Times

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Fear of recession or depression has people worried about the economy. Many people are losing jobs, some are losing homes to foreclosures. Companies and banks are failing. Think again about new ways to create income or prosperity.

Web prosperity is making it more inviting for more people to try moving online for income. Online businesses offer new opportunities for web prosperity. Strong teams are forming now and will be creating their own web prosperity because of good leadership.

With renewed income and prosperity people often seek new forms of leisure. If you want to get into a really popular and relatively easy sport, try bird watching. Go find some good bird binoculars. There are many kinds of bird binoculars to choose from so doing some online research will save you some time at the shopping end. Some people prefer big binoculars or plan to watch wildlife at dusk and they need special kinds of lenses. Do You Have Blogging Inertia?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Even though blogging may help get more traffic to your site, it can take up a good bit of your time. In particular, you will always need to add new posts and materials on a regular basis if you want to ensure that the blogging and traditional search engines will go on giving your site a good rank. While a blog format tends to be easy to update, you will still need to produce the content.

As may be expected, you can always hire someone to create blog posts, and then update the blog on a weekly basis. If you are planning to use this method, you should find some way to ensure that each blog post also has some type of relevance to current issues in your niche. For example, if you own a blog on modern printers, it will not be of much use to post information about outdated dot matrix printers. On the other hand, you may want to talk about advances in laser printers, or new models that are available for consumers to purchase.

When you start working with blogging, you will soon realize that each blog takes on its own flavor and style. Typically, if you switch authors, your readers will recognize a difference in the style, as well as the content. If you manage to find a better writer, this will be to your advantage. That said, if you find a writer that can get more traffic to your blog, it may be best not to tamper with success. As may be expected, if you start writing the blog on your own, you may need to work with it directly for a longer time than you had initially planned. Without a question, you should not get involved with creating a blog if you feel that you will not enjoy working with the topic on a long term basis.

Unlike other types of promotional materials for your website, blogging can be used to reach out to potential customers in a very personal way. Since your readers will always be looking for new or interesting insights, you will need to make sure that you are able to develop the blog sequentially. At the very least, before you start writing a blog, you should make a list of all the general topics you want to cover, and then the number of posts you will dedicate to that topic. This will be of immense help, even if you decide to hire a writer to assemble each blog entry. So you need to take action now to get more traffic to your website or blog.

Connective tissue manipulation helping your body relax into a healthier state

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Connective Tissue Manipulation.

Carried out by the Physiotherapist with the maleable surface of the finger tips to move one level of skin on the level underneath. This motion causes a short, sharp, flex reflex, causing a reaction, which moves out along the connective tissue. The patient’s brain translates this reaction as if it were a ‘cut’ or a ‘abrasion’. The tighter the connective tissue the larger the flex reflex and this then in turn feels more intense to the patient. The reaction is a little reaction which travels through the liquid in the connective tissue and releases tension.

The lessening in stress surrounding the blood vessel walls lets additional blood to move into the damaged region and so reduces the inflammation. Connective tissue manipulation helps in softening the connective tissue helps allow more motion to occur without triggering off irritation and therefore pain. Dealing with this often begins at a distance from the damaged part slowly working towards the starting place of the injury. The benefits of Connective Tissue Manipulation are cumulative. Once the stress has been lowered by treatment the reduction is maintained. Continued lessening in connective tissue tension happens with each extra manipulation.

The amount to which the reduction in connective tissue tension is maintained is dependant on the amount of stress placed on the body by the individuals lifestyle. Connective Tissue Manipulation is a skill studied at postgraduate level in the United Kingdom and because of this it hasn’t spread very quickly across the land. At last calculation, there were something like two dozen Physiotherapists in the UK actively practising Connective Tissue Manipulation.

Finding Crafty All About Psychology

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

When we are children we tend to dream about what we will do as adults. The many careers that we choose are one like police officers, school teachers, doctors, astronauts, cowboys and movie stars. This study of human behavior and nature is conducted groups, communities, as single individuals and as organizations.

The best way to accomplish having a foot into the doorway of psychology is to study the various courses that deal in the broad spectrum of psychology and have some fieldwork and work experience under your belt. As you begin to qualify you can see which of these careers in psychology will interest you. A good child psychologist will be able to understand and treat the problem so that the child can begin to deal with it in a sensible way and find their balance. It’s similar to human behavior. These problems will need to be handled with care and patience.

This child psychologist will have the training and the necessary ability to deal with all of the behavioral and emotional aspects that a child might experience. To slowly unravel this puzzle and help the child deal with the various difficulties a child psychologist will have to gain the trust of the child and use some innovative tactics to have the child explain what is hurting them. Of course this has nothing to do with a study in psychology. By working on having the child tell what is causing the problems a child psychologist can begin to understand how to recommend help and inform the parents of the action or inaction that they will have to take. A child psychologist will need lots of patience and imagination to deal with their young patients.

Additionally a child psychologist can use the various information that has been uncovered to find correlations in behavior patterns. With this information you will know what the best approach is for dealing with your young patients and understanding the difficulties that they are facing. To be a good child psychologist who will have your patients confiding in you, you will need to be very inviting and have a personality that says, trust me.

Give gift cards for a sure to please present

Visa Prepaid Gift Cards

Although giving cash as a gift is a wonderful way to let the recipient spend your present in whatever way they choose, there are certainly drawbacks to giving cash. For instance, sometimes cash doesn’t feel like that much of a gift in the sense that it’s easy for people to just put it in their wallets and spend it incrementally on inconsequential things. In addition, if cash is stolen or lost, it’s gone forever. Happily there are alternatives to cash gifts.

Visa prepaid gift cards provide all the flexibility of cash presents, with many added benefits. While gift recipients spend the money as they wish, they don’t have to worry about cash getting stolen or used up without them noticing – which means your gift, present stands a better chance of being remembered. If the gift card gets lost or stolen, the owner can report it missing and obtain another card with the remainder of the money on the card.

Prepaid VISA gift cards are an great gift for all kinds of occasions, givers, and recipients. Just think of any event where it’s common to give cash gifts – weddings and graduations spring to mind – and consider that a gift card is so much more safe than actual cash. But don’t be limited to only these kinds of occasions. Gift cards that aren’t only for a particular store are also great gifts for birthday presents, anniversary presents (although probably not between spouses, who would like something a little more personal and long-lasting), and much more. They’re also an excellent option for employers to use to give their employees as end-of-year gifts, and you can buy gift cards in bulk, making them convenient for the giver as well.

These gift cards are also great substitutes for prepaid gas cards. They can be used at any gas station that accepts VISA so they make great presents for people going on a car trip or for family who used their precious fuel money to come visit you.
