Walking vs. Running

In the world today it always seems like there is so much to do and so little time. With technological advancements such as video games, television, and the internet who wants to spend any of their spare time exercising. Exercising may not always seem like the more enjoyable activity of choice but, I think most of us know that it is important. So, we know that we should exercise but which is better for you walking or running?

I hope that one day people will realize the importance of exercising and how it can benefit their life. So how do we decide which activity is better for us? If we were to choose based only on which would help us burn more calories most of us would probably pick running. Running burns more calories when you’re talking about shorter distances. When we are talking about speeds over five miles per hour I’ve heard that running can burn as much as twice as many calories.

Not to be contradictory but in some cases walking can burn more calories than running. Depending on how far we walk and if we walk at a faster pace we may burn more calories by walking. If you walk at an increased pace it becomes more challenging. No two people are the same in shape or size. If you are overweight or have heart problems walking may be your only option. When you walk you have less chance of injury. Because your speed is slower and the impact on your joints is less, you are less likely to have knee pain, shin splints, or back pain.

So we know that exercising can help us be healthier. Both walking and running can help with weight loss or getting in better shape, but what works for you may not work for someone else. Everyone has different goals. I’m a triathlete and walking won’t really help me get a whole lot faster. You may not be a runner or an athlete. If your goal is just to be healthier than walking may be the answer for you. High intensity training, such as running, can cause the body’s ability to fight infection to be impaired. You can burn more calories running a mile than you can by walking a mile. Both forms of exercise have their benefits. Everyone has different goals and just because I prefer one type of exercise it doesn’t necessarily make it right for you.
